Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent — and we now see it in people in their twenties.
The 60/60 rule
Keep the volume below 60% and listen for no more than 60 minutes at a stretch, then give your ears a break.
| Sound | Typical level | Safe listening time |
|---|---|---|
| Normal conversation | 60 dB | Unlimited |
| City traffic | 85 dB | 8 hours |
| Earphones at full volume | 100 dB+ | About 15 minutes |
Warning signs
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus), muffled hearing after listening, or asking people to repeat themselves. A simple hearing test takes 20 minutes.
